3 Great Reasons To Visit The Amalfi Coast This September

11. September 2017

by Dag Christian Holm

Every summer, the picturesque towns dotting the hillsides of Italy’s Amalfi Coast are overflowing with tourists from all over the world.

They come for the beauty of the coast’s rugged shoreline, sandy beaches with turquoise waters, and pastel-coloured fishing villages – an outstanding example of Mediterranean landscape and life. Add to that the chic boutiques, buzzing nightlife and some of Italy’s finest hotels and restaurants and you can see why the Amalfi Coast has been a magnet for visitors since Roman times.

But with so many people now clocking on, the summer months may not be the best time for a trip to the Amalfi Coast. Here are 5 reasons you should visit in September:

1. The crowds have gone

Every summer, the towns and beaches of the Amalfi Coast are packed with throngs of tourists all seeking their slice of the good life. Come September, however, the crowds disperse and the atmosphere becomes less frantic. You’ll notice it wherever you go –  there’s room to breathe on the beaches, you can get reservations easier at the best restaurants (the Amalfi Coast has no shortage of Michelin stars and fine dining establishments), and the locals are cheerier and have a lot more time for you.

2. Great weather

Once September hits the southern edge of Italy’s Sorrentine Peninsula, temperatures become a lot more comfortable than during the previous summer months. While it’s still just about warm enough for a swim in the ocean, an average high of 26°C means lounging on the sand or strolling through the quaint villages are both viable options.

3. It’s harvest season
September and October are harvest months for the vineyards of Campania, offering visitors a unique chance to tour the region’s wine country. In addition to private winery tours, wine tastings and vineyard walks, visitors can even spend a day on an estate picking grapes and helping with the harvest.

Where to stay?
When it comes to choosing where to stay on the Amalfi Coast, there’s plenty of great hotels to pick from. The Hotel Santa Caterina is top of many people’s list thanks to its cool Mediterranean style, unequalled hospitality, and its incredible position overlooking the ocean.

Alternatively, the Belmond Hotel Caruso, perched high above the hilltop town of Ravello, is one of the most romantic boltholes on the Amalfi. After starting life as a 11th-century palazzo, the 5-star hotel is today a world-class hotel that is home to an infinity pool that is often listed among the best hotel pools in the world, a number of quality restaurants and bars, a spa and fitness room.

Casa Angelina, in Praiano, is also a superb option, especially for the design-conscious who will appreciate the owner’s stunning art collection. There’s also a plush swimming pool and a stylish terrace, while the cocktails are also worth sampling (multiple times if necessary).
